Grene Robotics to compete in XPRIZE Rainforest competition

Grene Robotics, an innovation-led technology company that delivers Robots as a Service (RaaS), has been selected from India to compete with global companies and teams in the final round of the XPRIZE Rainforest Competition.

XPRIZE started the Rainforest Competition to improve the understanding of the rainforest ecosystem. The five-year XPRIZE Rainforest Competition is a call-to-action initiative to help save rainforests through the development of transformative, scalable, and affordable technology to autonomously survey and monitor biodiversity in near real-time leading to insights that communicate the health, well-being, and value of standing tropical rainforests while ensuring that competing teams co-design and co-create solutions with indigenous people and local communities as key stakeholders. The idea is also to create a business model that can be a beacon in bringing in the technology in conservation.

The competing teams will leverage the existing and emerging technologies such as robotics, drone, nano drones with sensors, drones designed for sample collection, remote sensing, data analysis, artificial intelligence, DNA sample collection, Genome sequencing, and machine learning to develop new rainforest biodiversity survey tools that will deliver information more quickly, affordably and in unprecedented detail without physical human intrusion into the rainforest.

With over a decade in R&D, Grene Robotics’ Forest Conservation Dome is a fully autonomous solution that provides multi-spectral near real-time reconnaissance and surveillance of the forest. The solution, once deployed, can help fight modern-day threats, including unauthorized deforestation, wild forest fires, human encroachment, trespassing, smuggling, wildlife poaching, mitigate man-animal conflict, and track animal migration.

Ahmed Chamanwala, Executive Director – Forest Conservation, Grene Robotics, in a statement said, “It has become imperative to control the use, exploitation, and management of forests through sustainable planning. That can be resolved by bringing about a change in forest management and conservation practices by integrating technological innovations. Our experience with XPRIZE Rainforest Competition will help us refine our capabilities allowing us to build scalable and affordable technology to autonomously survey and monitor biodiversity in near real-time.”

Grene Robotics entered the competition in association with Fringe Ford(rainforest landscape), Field Projects International(research group), and TRAK-TFRC(biodiversity/ conservation equipment). Grene Robotics, in collaboration with its partners, has started deploying the technology on the ground across Fringe Ford’s landscape collecting data in near real-time. Fringe Ford is one of the largest privately-owned forests in India. The 600-acre property shares its boundaries with the Wayanad Tiger Reserve, Tholpetty Reserve Forest, and Arlam Tiger Reserve, making this entire stretch one of the last remaining bastions of the Malabar rainforests. However, the actual competition will be held only at a rainforest that XPRIZE chooses.

Why is this so important to India?
As the world advances with technology and most sectors are leapfrogging into the future, the forests in India are ignored or are fighting a battle every day to protect and conserve what’s left of our open treasures. Grene Robotics wants to change that by bringing technology into conservation with a range of automated hardware, research partners, and conservation, biodiversity equipment providers.

Grene Robotics Designs and Develops India’s 1st Autonomous Drone Defence Dome system: “Indrajaal”

Grene Robotics has designed and developed India’s first 100% indigenous Unified, Distributed and wide-area Autonomous Drone Defence Dome called Indrajaal. Indrajaal will protect a large area of 1000-2000 sq. km per system against threats such as UAV’s, Incoming Weapons, Loitering Munitions, Low-RCS targets autonomously. 

Grene Robotics has developed extensive AC6ISRT capabilities in the form of Defence OS over an 8 year of R&D journey backed by decades of system development experience for the armed forces.  Grene Robotics advisory board consists of Retired Defence Scientific Advisor, Deputy Chief of Army Staff, BEL Director and Air Force veteran who was instrumental for designing India’s most comprehensive command and control system for the Indian Air Force called IACCS.

Why is this critical?

India must stop adopting reactive measures and embark on responsive and autonomous systems to be prepared for modern warfare. Manual weapons and point based defence systems cannot fight modern warfare driven by AI and Robotics. For the first time in India and many times globally rogue forces have adopted cutting-edge technologies such as UAV’s, Smart Swarms etc. Jammu Air Base on June 27th was attacked by such technologies to drop explosives next to Mi-17 hangar.

PLA is already toying with advanced weaponry in Western Theatre Command (WTC) tasked with military operations against India along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Drones are being used to train the infantry to conduct beyond Visual Line of Sight Targeting. The PLA also developed a high-altitude and high-speed armed drone, the WJ-700, in 2021. In 2020, it introduced armed robots, and in 2021, reconnaissance robots, in its military exercises.

Limitation of current deployments

Point defence Anti-UAV systems will not be able to counter and protect large defence bases, NCR and linear infrastructure like international borders and such sensitive areas against aforementioned threats. A minimum of 300 systems are required to be deployed to protect the entire western border and this is financially not a viable option. On the contrary 6-7 sectorally deployed Indrajaal systems with their seamless connectivity can protect the entire western border.

How does Indrajaal work

Autonomous Defence/Weapon Systems is the 3rd revolution of the warfare and Indrajaal’s design principles are based on delivering such autonomy to the Defence Forces leveraging a combination of 9-10 modern technologies powered by Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Robotics that is capable of identifying, assessing, deciding, acting and evolving autonomously in real-time. Whether the threat is single or multiple or a combination of UAVs, Low-RCS, Loitering munitions and such, Indrajaal is capable of countering all such threats.

Wg Cdr MVN Sai (Retd), CEO Defence, Grene Robotics said, “I urge the defence leadership to take an integrated and comprehensive approach against all the UAVs, loiter ammunition swarm drones and low RCS threats with indigenously developed Autonomous Defence Systems.   Conventional defences will be overwhelmed in a swarm attack scenario and an AI Enabled Autonomous Dome with its own ecosystem of sensors and processing is the way forward. The process of establishing a fully functional system is an evolutionary process and needs technology vision and user involvement.” 

Earlier this year Grene Robotics announced their partnership with (BEL) to jointly develop first-of-its-kind Autonomous air defence technology, bringing India on par with the best autonomous defence systems of the world.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) breathed in its last few breaths in the last five years. Some want to believe it still hasn’t happened. The naysayers are the ones who are adamant that Autonomous Systems are yet to overtake or replace traditional ERP – and they may not be entirely wrong. ERP continues to live in our hearts. After all, it continues to be a hurdle for IT leaders and businesses, be it design, implementation, lifecycle management or value realization. ERP, in its youth, failed to solve the problems that it was actually designed for. It was not ERP’s failure alone, we perhaps, failed to utilize its full potential. To add to ERPs perplexity, advancements in business models meant, more complex systems and processes, that required data camaraderie, which just wasn’t in its design. Furthermore, ERP implementations are challenging, especially when the organization’s goals and software quality do not match. In a nutshell, the marriage wasn’t just meant to be!

Grene Robotics and BEL partner to bolster India’s autonomous air defence capability

Hyderabad-based Grene Robotics on Friday signed an MoU with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna Defence PSU, to jointly develop an Autonomous MANPAD Data Link (ADML) system, a first-of-its-kind air defence solution that brings isolated MANPAD (man-portable air-defense system) operators into a networked environment.

The MoU, which was signed at the Aero India 2021, aims at bolstering the country’s autonomous air defence capability. This technological collaboration will reduce asymmetries in controlled warfare and will be first deployed on MANPADS, which are short-range weapon systems.

Deploying the system in MANPADS will enable a command centre to give real time firing commands to Armed personnel by taking into consideration technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality. On the ground, when deployed, the system has the capability to reduce fratricide and is capable of handling all types of weather.

Rajasekhar MV, director (R&D), BEL, said, “AMDL is a state-of-the-art data link system, which exploits AI to provide a comprehensive air-defence solution. We are happy to be partnering with Grene Robotics, which is a niche company working in the core areas of AI and robotics.”

Gopi Krishna Reddy, director, Grene Robotics, said AMDL was a step forward in air defence technology. He said it was to be developed with the combined capabilities of BEL and Grene and was the first of many last mile C5I Systems in the air defence space.
